The persimmon tree is one of the ebony plants and is native to Asia. The easy-care plant grows in tropical regions. It is also becoming increasingly popular in our latitudes as a useful and ornamental plant.

Originally from China and Japan, the persimmon tree is robust, easy to care for and extremely resistant to diseases and pests. The persimmon tree needs a long and sunny summer to harvest fruit and preferably a mild winter, as is the case in wine-growing regions in this country. As a container plant, the persimmon tree can also thrive in colder areas.

How much water do persimmons need?

The persimmons like it dry rather than moist. The outdoor plants should only be watered when it has not rained for a particularly long time in midsummer. The potted plants need regular watering, but care should be taken to avoid waterlogging. In winter, the tub persimmons should only be watered so much that they do not dry out.

How are persimmons fertilized?

Persimmons are fertilized sparingly with organic (compost, horn shavings) or mineral fertilizer for fruit trees (containing nitrogen and potassium) in the period from May to August. Over-fertilization can cause the persimmon trees to lose frost resistance.

Do persimmon trees need to be cut back?

The persimmon plants can be cut back at the end of winter as well as in autumn. Since persimmon trees grow similar to native apple trees, all common pruning measures can be carried out on them if necessary:

  • plant cutting,
  • education cut,
  • fruit woodcut and
  • taper cut.

Are persimmons susceptible to disease?

There are no known diseases in the kaki plants available in Germany. Nor are the trees afflicted by pests.

How are persimmons overwintered?

Depending on the variety, the kaki plants are frost-resistant to varying degrees. It is recommended to keep the young persimmon plants in a bucket for the first few years and only plant them out when they are older and larger. The potted plants are overwintered frost-free and in the dark after the leaves have been shed. During the winter break, do not fertilize and only water so much that the plant does not dry out completely.
