Hyacinths are not only particularly colorful and fragrant spring flowers. The possibility of caring for the flower in the hyacinth glass is also an interesting task for hobby gardeners. Even our grandmothers grew the plants in glass.

What should hyacinth glasses be like?
The hyacinth glass has a special shape. It consists of a bulbous lower part and a likewise curved upper shell, into which a hyacinth bulb fits exactly.
The lower part is filled with water. The onion receives moisture without coming into direct contact with the water surface. In the glass, the hyacinth does not need soil. So it's kind of like a form of hydroponics.
Hyacinth glasses are available from specialist retailers. But you will also find numerous offers for decorative models in online shops that are suitable for caring for hyacinths in glass.
How to grow hyacinths in a jar
- clean glass
- Fill with water at the bottom
- Put hyacinth on top
- Keep cool and dark
- Top up with water daily
The glass is well rinsed and cleaned so that bacteria no longer cling to it. Residues of washing-up liquid must also be removed.
Fill the glass with fresh water. Place the hyacinth bulb in the top tray, tip up. There should be little space between the root and the water level. Under no circumstances should the onion have direct contact with water. You have to refill fresh water every day.
The hyacinth jar is placed in a cool, dark place until flowering. A temperature of around ten degrees is ideal.
Cover the tuber with a paper cone
If you don't have a suitable place to place the jar in a dark place, use a paper cone in the shape of a cone.
You can make it out of cardboard or any other opaque fabric.
By darkening you create the same conditions as the tubers have in the ground. The roots only form when it is dark.
After two to three months on the windowsill
It takes two to three months for the hyacinth to put out leaves and finally flower stalks.
Wait for the paper cone to lift itself up over the hyacinth jar. Then leaves and flower stalks have developed well.
Now you can remove the blackout or get the glass out of the dark and place it on the bright and warm windowsill.
Hyacinths can only be grown in jars once a year
Unfortunately, hyacinths in jars only last for one season. After flowering, the tuber is exhausted and must be thrown away.
Although you can try to plant them in the garden, this effort is usually not crowned with success.
tips and tricks
Hyacinth glasses look particularly decorative if you line the glass with small decorative stones in the color of the hyacinth blossom. The roots spreading above it give an interesting appearance.
