Ornamental Perennial Lily Daylily
title: Courage to act - replanting daylilies
The main reasons for transplanting
As a rule, daylilies are transplanted when:
- the space at the site is no longer sufficient
- the location is not suitable (too sunny, too shady, etc.)
- another plant should be placed in its place
- their willingness to bloom decreases
Find the perfect location
Daylilies prefer to grow in a warm to moderately cool and bright spot. Full sun locations are well suited for daylilies with bright flowers. Partial shade is the better choice for daylilies with dark flowers. There, the flower colors fade less quickly due to the incident sunlight.
The best time to convert
Daylilies should be transplanted before sprouting or immediately after flowering. If you miss the right time, these robust plants can also be transplanted in summer. They usually survive the procedure unscathed.
Dig up and divide the daylily
First you should carefully dig up the daylily with a digging fork or small shovel. Be careful not to damage the root! After the root is lifted out, it should be cleaned. It is then advisable to divide them into fist-sized pieces. On the one hand it serves to propagate this plant and on the other hand it gives the old plant more strength again.
Plant new daylily(s).
Now it depends on the right location:
- dig a planting hole in the designated place
- pile up soil in it
- place root on it
- Cover the roots with soil, press the soil down and water generously
- if necessary, mulch the root area
For a better acclimatization in the new place, the leaves should be shortened to 15 cm. It is also important that no competitors from the plant world disturb you in the beginning. It should be watered regularly for 2 weeks.
tips and tricks
Don't worry if the daylily doesn't bloom after transplanting. Often after such stress, she will stop flowering or produce fewer buds.
