Like all plants of the "Solanum" family, the gentian bush, also known as the gentian tree or potato tree, belongs to the nightshade family. Almost all representatives of this genus are poisonous. Caution is therefore called for with children and animals in the household and when caring for them.

The toxin solanine
All parts of the gentian bush contain solanine, which affects the leaves, flowers and the fruits that ripen from them.
Solanine is intoxicating and mind-altering. Even slight overdoses can lead to severe symptoms of poisoning:
- cardiac arrhythmias
- delirium
- respiratory paralysis
- circulatory collapse
Even contact with the leaves can cause mild poisoning. Therefore, always wear gloves when cutting and other maintenance work and make sure that you do not touch your face with your hands.
In case of poisoning immediately to the doctor
If you, your family members or pets have ingested parts of the plant, you should call the poison control center immediately and consult a doctor or veterinarian.
tips and tricks
The small spherical fruits are a special attraction for children. If you have children in the house, you should place the gentian tree out of reach or pluck out the fruit right away.
