For many years, the hydrangea was hardly to be found in our gardens, as the plant was considered old-fashioned. Completely wrong, we think, because the large inflorescences give gardens and green areas a romantic flair. In addition, the hydrangea also decorates shady corners of the garden, which are otherwise often difficult to design. The garden beauty impresses with a long flowering period.

Well cared for hydrangeas already show their first blossoms in June

The months of the main flowering

If the hydrangea feels comfortable in its location and has been sufficiently fertilized, the first flowers will appear in June. They remain in place well into September and do not have to be removed even in winter. Covered with frost and snow, they give the garden a morbid charm.

Do not prune hydrangeas after they have bloomed

Many hydrangea species are already preparing the flower heads for the next year at the end of the flowering period in late summer, when the temperatures during the day fall below 20 degrees. It is therefore advisable to only cut out the dried-up branches in autumn so that you do not have to do without the flowers in the following year.

Watch out for late frosts

Night frosts in spring can almost completely destroy the hydrangea's flowering base. Therefore, make sure you have adequate winter protection, not only in harsh areas. It is recommended not to pry out faded flowers in autumn, as the faded umbels provide natural protection against frost.

tips and tricks

Only cut hydrangea flowers for the vase relatively late in the flowering period, because only then will the petals have enough strength. If the flowers in the vase look fragile and lose color, you can dry them and place them in bowls as attractive room decorations.
