Whether you sown it yourself or bought it as a young plant - the columbine is often planted in perennial beds, along roadsides and elsewhere because of its enchanting flowers. When does it bloom and what do the flowers look like?

The columbine flowers in different colors during the flowering period

Flowering period: May to June

For the columbine, May is the main flowering time. Depending on the variety, the flowers are usually present well into June. If the flowers have not appeared by then, it could be because the columbine often only flowers in the second year. So wait patiently before throwing in the towel!

How do the flowers look?

The flowers are located on long and thin stalks. They are standing tall and nodding. They are composed of two circles of petals among others. While the inner circle tapers backwards, the outer circle is turned upwards. The flowers can have the following colors:

  • White
  • pink
  • purple
  • blue
  • yellow
  • orange
  • burgundy
  • two tone

Cut back after flowering

After flowering is over, the leaves turn yellow. The columbine is looking forward to the end of its growing season this year. So now is a good time to cut them back. With luck, new flowers will form by autumn.

If you want to prevent the columbine from seeding itself after flowering, you should cut off the flowers by July at the latest. Otherwise, the seeds form, which ripen from July/August and are scattered out in the capsule fruit after they have dried.
