If facades, walls, fences or similar are to be greened quickly, the knotweed is often the first choice. The climbing plant grows extremely rapidly and grows up to one meter per day. However, the enormous growth also has disadvantages, because knotweed quickly overgrows even very large areas, can cause severe damage and is difficult to remove. Due to its joy of growth, it is difficult to keep it in a bucket.

Knotweed rather unsuitable for keeping in buckets
Knotweed not only grows enormously above ground and can climb up to 15 meters in just one year, but also stretches underground both in depth and in width. Knotweed roots can reach several meters deep and are also wide and widely branched. Due to the strong root growth, any plant pots quickly become too small for the climbing plant, so that it reacts with poor growth, unsatisfactory leaf or flower decoration or even with yellow, falling leaves.
Climbing plants for the tub
If you are only interested in strong and fast foliage, you have many choices among the climbing plants. For example, annual varieties that are sown in spring and quickly cover fences, walls, etc. with opaque greenery are very suitable. If it is an evergreen plant, ivy or evergreen honeysuckle are suitable. Fire beans or clematis are also well suited for such a purpose. Be careful with the popular hops, this plant also tends to proliferate.
Cultivate knotweed in a bucket
Are you not convinced by the alternatives and should it definitely be knotweed? Under certain conditions, this climbing plant can also be cultivated in a bucket, the most important being the size of the planter: knotweed needs a pot that is as wide and deep as possible, a simple balcony box is not sufficient. The bucket should hold at least 45 liters, preferably even more.
Caring for knotweed properly
Otherwise, you should consider the following points when caring for the bucket knotweed:
- Use nutrient-rich soil.
- Make sure that the plant is as bright as possible.
- The bucket, however, should be in the shade, i. H. cool, stand.
- Cover the top layer of soil with mulch (€239.00).
- Provide good drainage.
- Water a lot and plentifully - at least twice a day on warm days.
- Fertilize with green plant fertilizer during the growth phase.
- Fertilize during flowering with flowering plant fertilizer.(10.47€)
- Protect the pot in winter.
- Cut the plant regularly and vigorously!
tips and tricks
If you want to use knotweed for balcony greening, it is not advisable - especially if you live in a rented apartment. Knotweed not only grows quickly, but also has an enormous destructive power, which can cost you dearly in an emergency.
