Both the yellow coneflower (Rudbeckia) and the red coneflower (Echinacea) like a warm and sunny location. Both also prefer a humic, nutrient-rich soil. In terms of moisture, however, they have different requirements.

The coneflower likes it sunny, warm and sheltered from the wind

While the red coneflower can cope quite well with a dry period, the yellow coneflower has great difficulties with it. It needs a rather moist soil, while the Echinacea prefers a permeable one. A windbreak is good for both genres. If you plant the coneflowers in autumn, then the plant can establish itself well before winter and sprout faster in spring.

The best location tips for coneflowers:

  • sunny and warm
  • protected from the wind as much as possible
  • nutrient-rich soil
  • Coneflower: well-drained soil
  • Yellow coneflower: moist soil

tips and tricks

The name is no coincidence: the sunnier you choose the location, the more profusely the coneflower will bloom.
