Anyone who thinks that sunflowers always only have one large, golden-yellow, radiant flower has not yet heard of the "Abendsonne" variety. This strain produces beautiful buds that range in color from orange to deep red. Often they are even multicolored.

Several multicolored flowers on one plant
Several flowers grow on each stalk of the 'evening sun' sunflower. They don't get quite as big as those of the well-known giant sunflowers.
Instead, they shine in the red-gold colors of a sunset. This sunflower variety lives up to its variety name with its flower colors.
The flowers, which bloom in two colors, are particularly decorative. Often they have a yellow wreath inside and out, while the center wreath is red or orange.
Decorative privacy protection thanks to the long flowering period
'Abendsonne' has a very long flowering period. The first flowers appear in summer. New flowers keep appearing until the onset of frost.
The variety grows up to two meters high, sometimes individual plants even reach 2.50 meters. "Abendsonne" is therefore an ideal privacy screen on fences and terrace borders.
Undemanding and easy to care for
Like all types of sunflower, the "evening sun" is fairly undemanding in terms of location.
It likes it very much in the sun, but actually grows wherever there is space. In the shade, however, it remains rather small. There is a risk of the stems breaking in drafty places.
When planting in the garden, you should keep a planting distance of about 70 centimeters.
Cultivate "evening sun".
- Water daily
- In the heat, water twice a day
- Fertilize every two weeks
- Tie to support stakes
The care of “evening sun” is no different from that of other sunflower varieties.
Water plentifully and fertilize regularly because, like all sunflowers, the "evening sun" variety needs a lot of nutrients to reach its impressive size.
Buy “evening sun” or harvest it yourself
The "Abendsonne" cultivar is available as a seed bag in any well-stocked gardening store.
Harvest new seeds for sowing next year from the faded flowers.
Of course, you can also simply leave the faded flowers where they are to provide the birds with a source of food in winter.
tips and tricks
The sunflower "Abendsonne" is very suitable as a cut flower. It will last a long time if you cut it on a day that is as dry as possible. Dip the stems in boiling water for a few seconds and don't place the vase in too sunny a position.
