The scented geranium, also known as scented geranium, originally comes from the Mediterranean region and is quite sensitive to frost. In order not to have to buy new specimens every year or to multiply them by seeds, this plant should be overwintered.

The scented geranium is very sensitive to frost and should never be left outside in winter

In hibernation quarters: From October to May

That's how it's done:

  • before: shorten long shoots
  • remove old leaves and flowers
  • Remove a generous amount of soil around the root ball
  • from October place the plant in a pot or box and surround it with a little soil
  • place in a cool and bright place at 5 to 10 °C
  • Check regularly and water lightly if necessary

After hibernation (from May), the scented geraniums can move out. The following care is now important to prevent the plant from later refusing to flower:

  • pour more slowly
  • lightly fertilize
  • cut down to 10 cm
  • repot if necessary

tips and tricks

If flower buds form in winter, they should be broken out. Otherwise they rob the scented geranium of too much power.
