You can see reeds on numerous banks and meadows in our country. It is widespread all over the world and its population is stable. Therefore it is not under nature protection. But one of its namesakes sometimes does!

In some places, the cattail is a nature reserve

Reed is not just reed

There are basically three different types of plants that are referred to as reed:

  • reed
  • Chinese reed
  • Cattails

Neither Chinese reed nor reed are protected. They can be cut and dug up in public lawns or on lake or river banks. The beautiful fronds cut a fine figure as a dry arrangement or in bouquets.
Cattails, on the other hand, can be quite protected in some areas.

What does it mean when a plant is protected?

If a plant is under nature protection, this means above all that it may not be picked, pruned or otherwise modified in the wild. However, if the plant grows on your private property, you can do whatever you want with it.
So if cattails are growing in your garden, you can safely prune them, use their pretty bulbs for flower arrangements or tear out the entire plant.
