Creepers and tall grass that cling to the fence and tall grass that looks unkempt. Even if wild herbs are allowed to grow as they like in your own garden, an overgrown property line is not a pretty sight. In this article you will learn how to combat unwanted greenery on the fence and keep the enclosure weed-free.

Mulch significantly reduces weed growth

First remove wild growth mechanically

If weeds have already settled, you should cut them back and then pull out the roots. If possible, dig up the soil under the fence with a digging fork, because this way the root system can be picked out easily. It is worth doing this work very carefully, as many weeds grow back from the smallest root residues.

The above measures also help against winds that are otherwise difficult to fight. If these creepers have settled with you, however, consistency is required. After regularly mowing at ground level, you should pull the root parts out of the ground as long as possible. This weakens the plants so much over time that the winds no longer have enough energy for new growth.

Mulch under the fence

Wild herb seeds need light to germinate. Unfortunately, weed fleece (€21.70) can only be laid under the fence with great difficulty. However, a not too thin layer of mulch made of plant material serves the same purpose. Proceed as follows when deploying:

  • First weed the weeds.
  • Loosen the soil a little and pull out the remains of the roots.
  • Spread bark mulch or grass clippings about 5 centimeters thick.

The weeds are growing into my fence from the neighboring property. What to do?

Your neighbor has the freedom to design his garden as he pleases. However, with simple measures you can prevent root weeds from growing under the enclosure into your garden.

  • Lay polyethylene rhizome barriers along the fence so that weeds cannot penetrate them.
  • Install the barrier at a slight angle as this will direct the roots upwards.

tips

The most important thing if you want to keep the property line permanently weed-free: Never leave weeds for too long and remove them before they even start to seed. The use of a lawn edge cutter has proven itself for this purpose. For very long fences, you can alternatively use a brush cutter (brush cutter).
