The woody fruits ripen from September. They are yellowish to green in color and some have red cheeks. Since the fruits contain a high proportion of fruit acids and tannins, they taste very sour and tart raw. Therefore, they are only recommended for consumption when cooked.

Wild apple seeds contain amygdalin, which is broken down in the body by water and certain enzymes, releasing hydrocyanic acid. It is low in concentration, so accidental consumption is usually unproblematic. Only larger amounts can become dangerous and cause various symptoms of poisoning.
