Attaching an insect hotel to a tree has many advantages. On the one hand, it saves space on the floor that you can use for other purposes, and on the other hand, the inhabitants experience increased protection, since predators cannot easily get to the entry holes. However, some factors can still cause insects to avoid your hotel. You can find out how to avoid this on this page.

The insect hotel should be attached securely and firmly to the tree

height and position of the tree

An insect hotel (€11.33) should be installed at least half a meter above the ground. This makes it difficult for cats to access the entrance holes. To be on the safe side, wrap a film around the tree trunk so that predators cannot climb up it but slide off the smooth plastic. In addition, the material is protected from soil moisture at this height, which in the worst case can lead to rotting of the wood.
The tree should be in a sunny spot (see orientation information) and tower over hedges or buildings. The reason for this is that insects prefer a free entry path. High bushes should therefore not obstruct the path. It is best to underplant the tree with a few wildflowers so that the residents are always supplied with food.

alignment

  • Southern orientation
  • Best in direct sunlight
  • Avoid drafts

Hang up or screw down?

Insect hotels often hang loosely from a cord in the tree. What represents a respectable appearance is more of a disadvantage for the residents. Insects don't actually like it when the nesting site is constantly rocking in the wind. Therefore, when building your insect hotel, plan an eyelet in the back wall to which you can attach the shelter directly to the trunk.

Remove insect hotel in winter?

Under no circumstances should you move your insect hotel in frost to protect the animals from the cold temperatures. Most insect species use the shelter to hibernate. A change of location to a warm place would completely mess up the biorhythm and mean the certain death of the animals. By following the tips above for installing your insect hotel, you can rest assured that the occupants will survive the winter safely.
