Everyone is happy if they happen to find a four-leaf clover that promises good luck. However, if clover spreads in the lawn, many garden owners are less enthusiastic. White and red clover with their nectar-rich flowers doesn't just look ugly in the well-tended grass. Clover is a bee pasture and the stinging insects can become a danger if you or your children walk barefoot.

Why is Klee spreading so massively?
Clover forms large carpets, but remains very low. As a result, the blades of the lawn mower do not catch the plant and the clover can spread unhindered through the green. If you don't stop it, it will quickly overgrow bed and gravel areas.
Klee does not need any fertilizer because the plant produces its own nitrogen fertilizer through the symbiosis with special nodule bacteria. The less well cared for grasses can hardly withstand this competitive pressure.
Minimize clover in the lawn
Clover is easy to push back in the lawn:
- Drive over the clover areas with a scarifier (€84.00) several times in longitudinal and transverse lanes. This will cut through the runners and you can collect the clover nests.
- Larger stocks should be cut flat with a spade. Fill in the resulting hollows with topsoil and sow fresh grass.
- It is important to keep the young grass moist and to fertilize the entire lawn regularly to protect it from weeds.
Herbicides that act specifically on clover are not very useful
Special weed killers promise to only destroy the weeds, but to spare grasses. The funds are quite reliable for some types of clover. Nevertheless, you have to remove the weeds manually afterwards. As a result, the preparations do not really make work easier.
tips
Due to the increasingly drier summers, many green spaces are suffering. Clover, on the other hand, survives hot periods without any problems and also gets by with very few nutrients. Resourceful seed experts have taken advantage of this, bred the flowerless clover variety "Microclover" and added it to lawn mixtures. These form a lush green lawn that hardly needs to be watered, is very hard-wearing and is wonderfully lush green even during dry periods. In addition, the turf is so dense that flowering clover cannot settle.
