You would like to propagate a eucalyptus and are wondering which method is suitable? Propagation from cuttings is recommended for most trees. On this page you can find out why this is different with eucalyptus and which alternative options are available to you.

Eucalyptus is better grown from seed

Cuttings rather unsuitable

Since the fast-growing eucalyptus has to be pruned regularly, it seems to be a good idea to propagate its branches as cuttings.
But even gardening experts sometimes despair of multiplying by cuttings. Although cuttings are repeatedly offered on the Internet, the chances of successful propagation are very low.

Propagate eucalypts better by sowing

A better method is definitely propagation from seeds. You can also get these on the Internet, in the tree nursery or you can take the seeds from your own eucalyptus.

Action

  1. Stratify the seeds by storing them in the fridge for a week.
  2. Prepare seed pots with soil.
  3. To do this, mix potting soil with either perlite, (37.51€) coconut humus, birms, peat or conventional sand.
  4. Place the seeds on the surface of the soil and press them only lightly into the soil (the eucalyptus is a light germinator).
  5. Place the seed pots (€16.68) in a bright, warm spot. Temperatures of 20-25°C are ideal.
  6. Water the substrate at certain intervals so that the soil does not dry out but does not become waterlogged.
  7. Wait three to five weeks for the eucalyptus to germinate.
  8. When the shoots have reached a length of 10 cm, you can plant the eucalyptus in a bucket or in the garden.

Pros and cons of growing your own

Benefits:

  • Cost savings
  • Proud of own cultivation
  • Propagation via seeds is very likely to be successful
  • Simple procedure
  • Little material required
  • Relatively short germination time

Disadvantage:

  • Homegrown eucalypts will not bloom.
  • A sunny location is definitely required.
