The real walnut (bot. Juglans regia) usually reaches a stately height - and over the years also an impressive width. So it stands out from every tree population. Mature walnut trees reach an average height of 15 to 25 meters, some are even closer to the sky. But: It will take a few years before the huge splendor is achieved. This article informs you in detail about the growth per year and the development of the walnut.

Walnut trees grow very tall

Growth per year dependent on various factors

How high the annual growth actually is depends on several factors:

  • Type, variety
  • old
  • location

Type, variety

A seedling (freshly germinated young plant) initially grows very slowly (i.e. in the centimeter range). Only from the third year does it shoot up one to two meters per year.

In contrast, grafted varieties usually grow about 50 to 100 centimeters per year.

old

In general, the walnut tree is more reserved in its first two years of life - but then it picks up speed until it is 30 years old.

Then the annual growth slows down again.

In this context, it is worth noting that a walnut tree grows almost exclusively in height for the first three decades of its existence.

After that, the treetop finally has its grand entrance and grows in width. This process lasts until about the 40th year of life.

At the same time, the main phase of fruit formation begins.

Finally, growth decreases from the 70th to 80th year of life - the old age phase begins (with declining yields).

location

Depending on how good or bad the soil and nutrient supply are, the walnut tree will grow faster or slower.

Lime and nutrient-rich loam and clay soil promote growth.

Note: Pruning does NOT have a critical effect on growth.
