How does potato water work?
The effectiveness is based on two properties:
- Potato water contains a lot of starch. This clogs the stomata (plant pores), causing the growth to die.
- The cooking water is very hot and damages the plant cells.
You can also achieve the latter effect with boiling water. However, you have to boil this extra, while potato water is a regular waste product in the kitchen anyway.
How is potato water used?
Pour the hot water over the weeds right after the cooking process. After that, all you have to do is remove the dead plants.

Of course, not only hot potato water works, but also pasta or rice water, which also contains starch. If you pour it boiling hot over the weeds, weeds will be effectively destroyed.
