The strikingly striped stalks, which give the zebra grass its name, inspire at first sight. You too will probably succumb to the extravagance of the Far Eastern plant. The grass looks particularly beautiful when it borders a garden pond. But you don't have to buy tons of plants from the nursery. A single plant and the knowledge of how best to propagate it are enough to inexpensively grow a whole herd of zebra grass around the garden pond, so to speak.

Zebra grass can be easily propagated by division

Propagate zebra grass by division

The best way to propagate zebra grass is by division. Only a few steps are required for this procedure:

  1. dig up the root ball
  2. examine the root ball and remove any rotten or dried roots
  3. now divide the bale. Either use your bare hands or use a sharp knife or spade to help
  4. plant one half back in the ground immediately after dividing
  5. finally plant the other half in the desired new location

Alternative: root cuttings

This alternative method has both advantages and disadvantages. The procedure is similar to the division of the root ball described above, with the difference that you do not halve it, but remove any number of root strands. The advantage in this case is that you can grow several new plants at the same time, which you plant in different places in the ground. The disadvantage, however, is that you have to wait longer for budding due to the lower development of the root strands.

Propagation by seed?

A third option is to sow the seeds you have obtained yourself. However, this method is less recommended if you expect a sure success. The new plant does not always have the stripes typical of zebra grass. If you still want to try it, proceed as follows:

  1. prefer seeds
  2. store in a bright place and water regularly
  3. repot the first shoots
  4. plant outside in spring

time

Spring is the best season for propagating zebra grass. Your zebra grass should have been growing for at least three years by this point to allow the root ball to take the trimming. The division then takes place after the pruning, just before the grass sprout.
