Whether you want to propagate your zebra grass or just want to keep the plant in check, dividing the root ball makes sense in every respect. At the same time, the method of division is also the simplest method. In this article you will find out what you need to pay attention to and when it is best to start the ground-breaking ceremony.

Zebra grass is best propagated by division

manual

  1. expose the root ball
  2. depending on the intended purpose, you now have two options
  3. either you halve the bale into two equal parts
  4. or just remove a few side spurs
  5. use either your hands, a sharp knife, a spade, or an axe
  6. place one half in the exact same spot on the ground
  7. Plant the other half anywhere you like
  8. then water both the old and the new plant well

tips

Always use a sharp spade. On the one hand you have to use less force, on the other hand you only injure the remaining roots minimally.

The right time

The division of the zebra grass takes place as best as possible shortly after pruning and before new shoots appear, i.e. in spring. So that the plant can cope well with the removal of the roots, it should be at least three years old. Of course, you should choose a frost-free day for the procedure.

Predictive Care

Zebra grass spreads extensively without your intervention. Even if you do not want to propagate the plant, regular division of the root ball is recommended. After three years at the latest, you should inhibit growth in this way. Otherwise, the roots will become so strong that even with an ax you will find it difficult to cut through them. You don't even have to cut off half of the root ball. For routine care, it is sufficient to remove a few offshoots.
