In summer, its sprawling crown provides cool shade, and in winter even the black infructescence sticks to the branches. An ash not only impresses with its enormous growth height. But it is precisely this that makes the worthwhile deciduous tree unsuitable for many gardens. But if you pay attention to a few things when planting, nothing stands in the way of owning an ash tree in your own garden.

Ash trees are quite undemanding in terms of their location

site selection

Although young ash trees are also satisfied with shady conditions, the ash tree should not be planted as an undergrowth for optimal growth. Lots of light and sun allow the tree to grow quickly.

soil claims

  • wet
  • nutritious
  • cool
  • pH higher than 4
  • water storing
  • dry soils are also possible

Note growth height

Ash trees grow up to 40 meters high and are therefore among the largest deciduous trees in Europe. Its trunk can be 2 meters in diameter. On the one hand this growth is impressive, on the other hand it also causes arguments at the garden fence and complications with buildings. Only plant an ash tree in your garden if there is enough space available. There must be no walls in the immediate vicinity.

tips

Not sure if a tree of this size fits in your garden? There are also species available on the market that have a significantly narrower growth. You will also often find them on streets where they are used for greening. You don't have to do without an ash tree in your own garden, despite the lack of space.
