Oranges are an important source of vitamin C, especially in the winter months, and should therefore not be missing from any fruit bowl. However, the orange cannot be eaten like an apple or pear "just for a moment". No, an orange has to be peeled before it is eaten.

Oranges are best counted with an orange peeler

There are several methods of removing the skin from the fruit. Everyone certainly has their preferences. It's nice when the fruit is still intact after peeling and can be divided into appetizing columns.

Peel the orange with a knife

  1. Cut a thin slice from the stem of the orange.
  2. At this point, begin slicing off the shiny skin in spirals, similar to an apple.
  3. Always cut carefully in a circle so that the spiral remains intact.
  4. Don't reach too deep, the white skin should completely surround the orange at the end. The flesh should not be bruised.
  5. Now, also starting from the top, start peeling off the white, inedible skin with the knife. That's relatively easy.
  6. Again, don't reach too deep to keep the pulp intact.
  7. Once the white skin is removed, the orange can be divided into individual wedges and served.

Peel the orange by hand

If you don't have a knife at hand, you don't have to do without an orange. Peel the citrus fruit with your fingers. However, this is a sticky affair.
Simple tips and tricks help with peeling:
Roll the orange on a smooth surface for about a minute, pressing lightly. This makes it easier to remove the shell.
If you have slightly longer fingernails, you can break open the shell better.

  1. Hold the orange in your hand and pierce the shiny skin at the top with your thumbnail.
  2. Slip your thumb under the shell and tear off piece by piece.
  3. If possible, do not reach too deep so as not to damage the pulp.
  4. If necessary, place a kitchen towel underneath or hold the orange over a plate in case juice does escape.
  5. Peel the orange from top to bottom or in a circle, whichever works best for you.

Peel the orange with a spoon

A very unusual idea for peeling an orange is to peel it with a spoon. To do this, cut the fruit all around in the middle. Then take the spoon and guide the stalk under the skin of the orange by the cut, if possible all the way to the top. Detach the peel on both halves by moving the handle of the spoon around the orange, then pull off the caps.
