The weigela is generally considered to be easy to care for, robust and floriferous. Since it also grows quite quickly, it is essential that you have enough space. In the wrong location, it is possible that the weigela will not bloom, then it should be transplanted.

The smaller the weigela, the easier it is to transplant

In principle, a weigela tolerates transplanting quite well, at least as long as it is still young. After about four years, you should only move Weigeli if it is absolutely necessary, for example because the space is urgently needed for other purposes.

Finding the right place for Weigelia

A Weigela thrives particularly well in a location in full sun. This is also where its colorful flowers are at their most luxuriant, while in the shade they hardly or not at all bloom. A fresh to slightly moist and humus-rich soil is advantageous.

A weigela can grow a good half a meter per year, so you should also consider this when choosing a location. This is especially important if you want to plant a large variety of this genus. The distance to the neighboring plants should be about one and a half meters.

Transplant young weigela

The propagation of the weigela is quite easy to do with the help of cuttings. However, you should only transfer the young plant to the garden after the first winter, even if weigela are considered to be quite hardy.

Before transplanting, dig a sufficiently large planting hole, about one and a half times the size of the root ball, and put some compost in it. This fertilizer is a small jump-start for easier growth. Insert the plant and press the soil firmly to the roots. Then water your weigela thoroughly. However, there should be no waterlogging.

The essentials in brief:

  • transplant as young as possible
  • older Weigelie does not take a move very well
  • Do not transfer home-grown Weigela to the open ground until after the first winter
  • Transplant Weigela in the bucket about every two years

tips

The younger your weigela is, the better it will tolerate being moved to another location.
