Without these tubers, cooking would lack two wonderful aromas. Only the stubborn smell that follows occasionally blocks the garlic's way into the kitchen. However, if both are in, they can also wait together for their deployment.

Onions and garlic get along very well

Both tubers are in demand

There is hardly a hearty recipe that can do without an onion. It's better without garlic. But those who love the sharp garlic aroma use the bulb whenever it suits them.

So that both plants are always ready to hand, stockpiling is the order of the day. It is only important that a suitable storage location is found that keeps the tubers fresh, turgid and tasty for a long time. And of course supplies have to come in time, because the warehouse must never be empty.

These are the storage requirements

What the onion likes, the garlic likes too. And what the garlic likes, the onion likes too. These are primarily the following storage conditions:

  • cool room temperature
  • dry air
  • dark place

Unfortunately, modern living spaces often lack a cool pantry. No one wants to run into the basement every day either. You can also store the tubers in the warm kitchen, but you should keep the amount in stock to a minimum.

Clay pot with holes is optimal

Special clay pots with air-permeable holes are sold on the market, in which you can store onions and garlic. A separate pot is offered for each type of tuber, but this does not have to be the case. A few small bulbs of garlic can always be accommodated in an onion pot.

tips

A linen bag is also suitable for storing onions and garlic, as it allows air to reach the bulbs while keeping out the light.

They don't like the fridge at all

It's far too humid in the fridge for these favorite ingredients. The tubers sprout quickly, become soft or mold. The mold spores may spread to other stored goods in the refrigerator. Not only are moldy fruits and veggies inedible, they're a completely unnecessary waste of food.

tips

Sprouted onions do not have to be thrown away. Plant the bulbs in a flowerpot and you'll soon be enjoying free onion greens.
