Pointed cabbage is one of the most tender types of cabbage. In the garden, the small and cone-shaped heads of cabbage can be harvested earlier than other types of cabbage. Freshly processed, it offers the best taste and a crisp bite. But even after a short storage it looks good.

Pointed cabbage wilts quickly

Don't store, prepare fresh

It is best to prepare the pointed cabbage immediately after harvesting or after purchasing it, as this type of cabbage is not made for long storage.

  • the delicate leaves quickly wither away
  • the firm bite disappears
  • the vitamins are also becoming less and less

When shopping, make sure that all the leaves are still green and full. In the garden, pointed cabbage is best harvested continuously, even before the heads have reached their typical final weight of 1.5 kilograms. In this way, the freshness season is extended in time. A large harvest, on the other hand, makes less sense because of the poor storability of pointed cabbage.

Store pointed cabbage only temporarily

If fresh pointed cabbage cannot be used immediately, short-term storage under optimal conditions is possible. The pointed cabbage should still be fresh and the head closed. Split cabbages are not suitable for storage.

Store pointed cabbage in the refrigerator

It's dark and cool in the fridge, so it's ideal for storing pointed cabbage.

  1. Remove wilted or damaged leaves.
  2. Wrap the cabbage in a damp kitchen towel.
  3. Place the cabbage in the vegetable drawer. If the compartment is too small, the cabbage can be placed elsewhere.
  4. Consume the cabbage within a week.

tips

The pointed cabbage should keep in the fridge for a full two weeks if it is wrapped in newspaper. At least that's a recommendation from grandma's time.

Store cabbage in the room

You can also store pointed cabbage in a cool and dark room. It can be hung in nets or placed on shelves. Previously, any leaves that are not in perfect condition should be cut off with a knife close to the stalk.

Don't stand next to apples

If pointed cabbage and apples are stored close together, it will not end well for the pointed cabbage. Apples give off ripening gases that speed up their withering process.
