The yellow turmeric powder has long been welcome in our kitchens. In contrast, the fresh turmeric root has only just begun its triumphant advance. The same applies to both: Essential oils, vitamins and minerals are only preserved if they are of good quality and are stored optimally.

Turmeric should be stored loose in the fridge

How to recognize fresh roots

What we refer to as turmeric roots are actually rhizomes that spread beneath the turmeric plant. The following signs indicate freshness:

  • the rhizomes are plump and firm
  • you can hear a cracking sound when they break apart
  • the fracture points are bright orange and have a juicy sheen

Can a turmeric root be stored?

Fresh turmeric roots can be kept longer, but they must be in ideal conditions. Roots that are too moist and stored for too long can form mold. If, on the other hand, it is stored too warm, it dries up or sprout.

Store fresh turmeric root in the fridge

A fresh turmeric root takes up space in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator. It must not be packed in airtight containers, otherwise it will soon have to be thrown away because of mold. It is sufficient if it is wrapped loosely in a plastic bag.

Freeze turmeric arhizomes

A turmeric rhizome can be divided into smaller pieces and frozen in portions. The root pieces can be grated while still frozen.

Turmeric powder - what to look for when buying?

At spice markets, turmeric powder is often offered loose and the desired quantity is weighed and packaged before purchase. The towering turmeric mountain looks impressive, but it also has disadvantages. The unpackaged spice exposed to daylight quickly loses its typical aroma.

Therefore, pay attention to how the spice is offered. When in doubt, a tightly closed can is preferable.

Can Turmeric Powder Go Bad?

The turmeric powder is particularly affected by the moisture. Then it can be that it completely spoils and is no longer usable.

In addition, the spice quickly loses its intense aroma. Turmeric powder should therefore not be stored for longer than six months. It is better to buy this spice in small quantities and only replenish it when needed.

The optimal storage of turmeric powder

Storage in the refrigerator is also a good idea for the powder form. However, the powder should be in a tightly closed jar so that it is protected from moisture.
