Dry chickpeas have a shelf life, so why freeze some? Because the frozen variant promises to save time. Because it makes spontaneous cooking possible in the first place. But in order for these versatile beads to be ready for use immediately after thawing, they must be properly prepared for their icy sleep.

Frozen chickpeas can be prepared quickly

Dry chickpeas have one downside

Before the actual cooking can start, dry chickpeas must first be soaked for a long time. By the time the finished meal is on the table, the craving for it has long since passed. While canned chickpeas are safe to use in cooking, they often contain undesirable additives.

That's why dry chickpeas are often soaked, pre-cooked and finally frozen. Only the last small step, the transformation into a delicious dish, remains to be done after defrosting.

Prepare chickpeas

Whenever there is time, dry chickpeas can be prepared for future cooking pleasure. And this is how you proceed step by step:

  1. Place the chickpeas in a large saucepan.
  2. Fill the pot with at least twice the amount of cold water.
  3. Let the chickpeas soak at room temperature for at least 12 hours. A soaking time of 24 hours is even better.
  4. Check from time to time whether there is still enough water in the pot.
  5. Cook the chickpeas until fully cooked.

tips

If there are chickpeas left over from the can or glass when cooking, they can also be frozen.

Freeze chickpeas properly

Allow the cooked chickpeas to cool completely before placing them in freezer bags. To ensure that these do not turn into a solid lump after freezing, the following work steps are helpful:

  • drain in a colander first
  • place on kitchen paper to dry
  • Alternatively, spread out flat on a tray and pre-freeze
  • fill into freezer bags only after drying or pre-freezing.

Defrosting made easy

The chickpeas defrosted quickly due to their small size. It is therefore sufficient if the desired amount is removed from the chest shortly before preparation. They can often even be put into the cooking pot in a deep-frozen state.

durability

Pre-cooked and then frozen chickpeas can be stored in the freezer for up to three months.
