Although the name clearly suggests it, raspberries are not really berries. Instead, they belong to the aggregate drupes. These always form several fruits on an inflorescence. This means that, in principle, each individual pearl of a raspberry is an independent fruit with its own core. This explains why raspberries contain so many seeds.

Raspberries can only be pitted if they are pureed

Pit raspberries - step-by-step instructions

Among hobby gardeners and cooks, there is often a heated discussion about how best to pit raspberries. We recommend you the following method:

  1. Puree the raspberries with a normal blender or with a "Flotte Lotte". The latter is nothing more than a hand-operated kitchen appliance with which you can chop berries and many other fruits quickly and gently.
  2. Then pass the obtained raspberry mixture through a sieve that is as finely meshed as possible. The following applies: the finer the mesh of the sieve, the fewer raspberry seeds manage to slip through the holes. They generally get stuck in the tight meshes. Metal and tea strainers, for example, are well suited.

tips

  • Clean the filter under running water immediately after use. In this way, you will be able to extract the cores without too much effort. If you wait too long, it can become a tedious task to get the sieve clean again.
  • If you own a fruit and berry grinder, you are also free to use it. Such a device is very practical, especially if you want to process larger quantities.
  • Sometimes it is enough to press the washed and dried raspberries through a sieve with a spoon. However, this method can be very tiring.

Better not to remove the raspberry seeds

Most people want to pit raspberries because unfortunately the fine pits tend to get caught between the teeth. This can limit enjoyment, especially when eating delicious jam. However, one thing to keep in mind is that the cores are not harmful, quite the opposite. They contain valuable minerals.

Our recommendation: If you don't find the raspberry pits annoying, you shouldn't remove them, regardless of what you want to conjure up with your fruit. Possible are:

  • Drinks/shakes
  • sweet soups
  • jam
  • fruity puree
