Blackberries inspire with their chic look, their delicious taste and, of course, their healthy ingredients. Only the kernels of the fruit are rather unpopular because they often get stuck between the teeth and can only be cleaned with difficulty from there. In our guide you will learn how to pit blackberries.

Blackberry seeds cannot be seen from the outside

Blackberries - aggregate drupes with many pips

Like strawberries and raspberries, blackberries are not actually berries. Instead, these are so-called collective drupes. These form several fruits on an inflorescence. Basically, each individual pearl of a blackberry functions as an independent fruit with its own core. For this reason, blackberries have a relatively large number of seeds.

Pitting blackberries - the best method

We advise you to core your blackberries as follows if necessary:

  1. Puree the carefully washed and well dried blackberries with a "Flotte Lotte", i.e. a hand-operated kitchen appliance that helps you to chop a wide variety of fruits quickly and gently.
  2. Strain the blackberry mixture through a sieve. This should be as fine-meshed and handy as possible. For example, use a metal, tea or hair strainer.

Solid alternative: just through the sieve

You also have the option to press the blackberries directly through a sieve after washing and drying - with the help of a spoon. But keep in mind that this variant can be quite exhausting.

tips

It is important to clean the sieve under running water immediately after use - later the cores can often only be removed from the gaps with difficulty.

Practical alternative: fruit and berry grinder

If you own a fruit and berry grinder, you should use it to pit blackberries. Its advantages are particularly noticeable when it comes to pitting a larger ensemble of blackberries or other fruits.

Blackberry seeds are valuable for health

The fine pits of blackberries may be annoying and unpleasant if they stubbornly lodge themselves in the spaces between your teeth - but they bring good substances with them and should therefore not be scorned. We advise you to pit blackberries only in an emergency. If you can get along with the components of the fruit to some extent, it makes much more sense to save yourself the sometimes enormously strenuous work and to benefit from the seeds in terms of health.
