What do you think the classic pepperoni looks like? Red, green, small, large, rounded or tapered? No matter what you answer, there is no wrong opinion. Because even the classic pepperoni does not exist. The colorful vegetables come in numerous colors and shapes. Do you already know the following varieties?

Hot peppers differ not only in their color

General

Peperoni, paprika, chili - there are so many terms that actually mean the same thing, but are not always used correctly. Chili and pepperoni are only subspecies of a pepper. This type of vegetable is divided into the following groups:

  • Capsicum annum
  • Capsicum baccatum
  • Capsicum chinense
  • Capsicum fructescens
  • Capsicum pubescens

The hot pepper belongs to the genus Capsicum annuum, which means annual fruit. However, many hot pepper varieties are perennial. The general name Capsicum already indicates the high capsaicin content of the fruit. This is an ingredient that causes the typical sharpness that you probably automatically associate with the term pepperoni. However, there would not be so many different types of peppers if they did not differ from species to species. The spiciness of a fruit is measured on the Scoville scale. Compared to other varieties, hot peppers are rather mild (level 3-6). Thanks to bred specimens, the pepperoni subspecies can be subdivided into different plants, which differ significantly in their appearance.
