The sack flower (bot. Ceanothus) originally comes from North or Central America. There are about 60 different species, some of which were bred as hybrids. Smaller species are very suitable for planting in tubs or for a low hedge.

What varieties of sack flowers are there?
The American buckhorn (bot. Ceanothus americanus) is even said to have a medicinal effect as a remedy for the spleen. In domestic use, however, it is more of an attractive ornamental plant. It grows in both southern Canada and eastern United States. The hybrids were bred from the American and Mexican sackcloth. However, the subdivision according to size or flower color is more interesting.
What flower colors are there?
The blue sackcloth (bot. Ceanthus x delianus "Glore de Versailles") is very popular and well-known. Bred in France specifically for the Central European climate, it is a hybrid of the American and Mexican sackflowers. With other varieties, however, the flower colors white, (dark) pink, various shades of blue and violet are also possible.
How and where do I plant a tall sackflower?
The sackcloth does not tolerate cold wind and needs a lot of warmth. Therefore, it is ideally located on a south wall. There is also a greater chance of surviving the winter there, but in a harsh area only with winter protection.
Where does a small buckskin feel comfortable?
In principle, a small sackcloth has the same needs as a tall one, but it takes up much less space. So you can also cultivate a small variety in a bucket for the terrace or balcony. In this way, the sack flower can be easily brought to a suitable winter quarters after flowering and pruning.
The low varieties of the sackflower are also well suited for a flowering hedge. Here, however, you should make sure that you buy a hardy variety. Otherwise, in a harsh area, the hedge could freeze to death if you don't put on winter protection.
