- Properly underplanting maple - this is how it works
A dense network of flat roots spreads out under the maple. Perennials and flowers for creative underplanting have a hard time here. As this guide reveals, you don't have to do without a tasteful plant community that lies decoratively at the feet of your Acer platanoides Globosum.

Plant selection - root pressure and penumbra are irrelevant here
Plants have to be tough if they want to hold their own as underplanting for trees. Root pressure and partial shade do not prevent the following ground covers from growing splendidly:
- Evergreen (Vinca major 'Variegata'), green and white variegated leaves, purple flowers in spring; 25-30cm
- Elfin Flower (Epimedium), delicate woodland perennial with numerous beautiful varieties; 20-30 cm growth height
- Golden strawberry (Waldsteinia ternata), evergreen ground cover with yellow cup-shaped flowers in April and May; 10-15cm
The place in the immediate vicinity of the trunk is reserved for robust shade perennials. The classic ivy (Hedera helix) is just as important as the heart-leaved foam flower (Tiarella cordifolia) and the filigree wood rush (Luzula sylvatica).
Properly underplanting maple - this is how it works
You can underplant your maple throughout the growing season. The best date is between July and September. By this time the tree has largely completed growth and is no longer fiercely competing for water and nutrients with its underplanting. How to proceed correctly:
- Remove weeds from the tree disc
- Find gaps between the roots with a spade or hand shovel
- Mark the spots with wooden sticks
- Cover the area with a 3-4 cm layer of leaf compost or potting soil
Now dig the planting holes at the marked spots. Meanwhile, soak the root balls of the potted plants in water. If no more air bubbles rise, pot the perennials and plant them. After you have pressed the substrate with your hands, please water generously.
Are you looking for gaps on the tree disc and can't find what you're looking for? Then you can cut off a maximum of a third of the root strands near the surface to make room for the underplanting.
tips
In the description of the spherical maple it can be read that the tree thrives as a heart root. However, an Acer platanoides Globosum neglects the deep growth of its roots if it is watered incorrectly. Don't water frequently and in small amounts, but penetratingly twice a week and let the water hose run for 30 minutes.
