A combination of paved surfaces and easy-care, decorative plants dominates the tasteful front garden design. A beautiful pavement made of natural stone drives up the costs considerably. Skilled home gardeners therefore step on the brakes on costs and simply lay paving stones themselves. These instructions explain step by step how to do it.

Material and tool requirements with preparatory work

Record all important data about the paved area in a detailed plan sketch. This results in a specific material and tool requirement consisting of the following components:

  • Paving stones (plus room for waste)
  • Possibly curbs and concrete
  • Gravel, crushed stone, construction sand and polymer joint sand
  • Stone cracker and vibrating plate (499.00€) (rented)
  • wheelbarrow
  • shovel or spade
  • Broom, rake, leveling board
  • pegs, string, spirit level

Measure the area to be paved in the front yard. Use pegs and a guide (7.13€) to mark the exact course along the upper edge of the paving stones. Then dig the ground 30 to 50 cm deep. If your garden is in a region with severe frosts, we recommend digging to a depth of 60 to 90 cm.

Create an anti-frost layer - this is how it works

To protect your valuable paving stones from frost damage, first lay down a frost protection layer of 32-grit gravel. Spread the gravel evenly in the excavated pit to a height of 10 to 30 cm. The vibratory plate is then used to compact the gravel layer.

Build bedding for paving stones - How to do it right

Lay out a sandy bed for your paving stones on top of the frost protection layer. A height of 4 to 5 cm is sufficient to lay the stones correctly later. A gradient of 2 percent effectively prevents the accumulation of rainwater. Use the leveling board to smooth out the layer of sand. When measuring the height, please note that the paved surface will be shaken off again at the end, resulting in an additional lowering of 1 cm. The stripped sand bed may no longer be entered.

Laying paving stones - That's what matters

In addition to the cut paving stones, the stretched guide line and the spirit level are your most important utensils. Place each stone individually in the bed of sand with a joint width of at least 5 mm. If necessary, lightly tap the stones into position with a rubber mallet.

At the end sweep the joint sand in with the broom until there is a gapless paved surface. If you follow our recommendation and use polymer joint sand, your front garden will be spared from weeds and ants, at least in this area.

tips

Larger paved areas in the front yard get more stability with edging stones. For this purpose, lay a 10 to 20 cm thick concrete strip foundation. You insert the edging stones one after the other so that they are fixed in the concrete to a third of their height. Tap the stones with a rubber mallet and check the alignment with the spirit level.
