The pelting rain causes petunias, geraniums and other balcony beauties to droop and droop. On the other hand, if the balcony box has a protective roof, even long-lasting downpours will not affect the flowering splendor. Here you can find out how to build your own rain protection for your flower box.
Too much rain can damage balcony plantsMaterial and tool list
- 4 wooden posts with pointed ends
- 4 wooden slats for the roof frame
- 4 angle irons
- UV stable film
- hand tacker
- nails
- hammer
In order for the rain cover to do its job perfectly, the height of the corner posts must be matched to the maximum growth height of the planting. According to these dimensions, have the 4 wooden posts cut to size at the hardware store and tapered at the lower ends. The length of the wooden slats for the roof frame are cut according to the length and width of the flower box.
assembly instructions
Insert the pointed end of the wooden posts into the 4 corners of the flower box. Then screw the 2 long and 2 short wooden slats to form a rectangular roof frame using the brackets. While a helping hand stabilizes the roof frame, nail the battens to the wooden posts. To optimize stability, we recommend installing two diagonal battens inside the roof structure.
If it is a self-made wooden balcony box, also screw the corner posts to the side walls of the plant container.
You construct the roof covering from the weatherproof, UV-resistant tarpaulin. Pull the foil over the rectangular roof frame and staple the edges. To prevent the ends from tearing out, leave an overhanging edge of 10 to 15 cm at these points.
Rain cover is not a windbreak
When using it, please bear in mind that a rain cover on the flower box (€16.99) increases the surface area for wind to attack. Strong gusts can get caught under the rain canopy and unhinge it. In the worst case, a strong wind will take the entire balcony box with it. We therefore recommend that you put a balcony box and its rain protection in there as a precaution in the event of a storm.
tips
A rain cover on the balcony box does not mean that holes in the ground and drainage to protect against waterlogging are now superfluous. Only fill a flower box with substrate when you have spread some potsherds, some grit (46.95€) or clay granules over the floor openings as a water-bearing layer.
