Are you bored of the ubiquitous plastic flower boxes? Do you lack the time to build a balcony box yourself? Then turn a disused, semi-circular gutter into an individual plant container. We will be happy to explain to you how easy it is to achieve clever metamorphosis.

Gutters are ideal as flower boxes

Material and tool list

The following materials and tools are required for the conversion work from the gutter to the flower box (€16.99):

  • Semicircular plastic gutter (new or used)
  • Attachable end pieces
  • Gutter Bracket
  • One-hand angle grinder or plastic saw

In order for an old gutter to start its second life as a flower box in new splendor, repaint the gutter, end pieces and brackets. Jansen's new special paint Pur-Plast for plastic is well suited for this purpose. The satin finish paint is applied with a brush made of plastic bristles or a short-pile mohair roller.

From the gutter to the flower box - this is how it works

The transformation action starts with you sawing the gutter into sections. You are not necessarily limited to the usual lengths of 60, 80 and 100 cm, but can cut your new balcony boxes (€109.00) precisely for the desired location. With the help of the attachable end pieces, you can close a balcony box on both sides. The disused gutter holders take over the function of feet.

Finally, drill two to three small holes for water drainage in the bottom of the box so that no waterlogging can later form as a result of pouring or rainwater.

Fill gutter balcony box - this is how you do it right

Before you fill in the potting soil for the planting, please put a few pieces of pottery shards on the bottom of the pot. These act as a water-bearing layer so that the holes in the bottom do not become clogged with soil. If you don't have any shards of clay at hand, you can use other inorganic materials, such as clay granules or grit.(46.95€) Separate the drainage and substrate with a water- and air-permeable fleece so that no crumbs of earth can get stuck.

tips

Standard brackets from specialist shops are not ideal for attaching a gutter flower box to the balcony railing. These are designed to provide support for rectangular planters. You can solve the problem by building the right balcony box bracket from sheet steel yourself. You can read here how it works in cooperation with a metal company.
