Materials list and tools
In order to position a balcony box on the window of a sloping roof, a roof step for chimney sweeps is converted into a box stand. You can obtain the following materials for a 100 cm long flower box (€16.99) primarily in the chimney market and sometimes in hardware stores:
- 2 grating supports with fastening material for supports and grating grid
- 1 grating with a length of 1,000 mm and a width of 250 mm
- 2 softwood slats with a minimum dimension of 24 x 48 mm
- 4 nails (3.8 x 110mm)
- 4 countersunk steel Phillips screws 4.5 x 30 mm or similar fastening material
- hammer
- Stable ladder
You also need a roll of wire to fix the balcony box on the fully assembled grating.
Instructions for assembly
The following instructions are suitable for mounting on roofs with a pitch from 22 degrees to 55 degrees. It is important to note that the softwood slats correspond to quality class II DIN 4074 in order to ensure maximum safety. The rafter cross-section should be at least 60 x 80 mm. How to proceed correctly:
- Mount the universal grating supports on the two slats with the countersunk steel Phillips screws
- Then attach the slats to 2 rafters with 2 nails each
- The battens must exceed the rafters by 60 mm on each side
- The lower edges of the grating supports must be flush with the roof tile
The supports and the walkway are connected using profiled spacer plates and M8 bolts and nuts, which are included in the scope of delivery. It is important to note that the contact surface does not deviate more than 3 degrees from the horizontal. We recommend grinding a U into the roof tiles in question in order to neatly lay the supports underneath. In this way it can be avoided that the roof tiles have to be lifted.
Fasten the balcony box - this is how it works
Place the planted flower box in the middle of the grating. Now you can use wire to connect the balcony box to the lattice in a storm-proof manner.
