Immortality herb (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) owes its name to the numerous ingredients that are particularly appreciated in Asia. The easy-care climbing plant is also enjoying increasing popularity in this country. The propagation is easy and succeeds even for beginners.

Immortality herb can be easily propagated by cuttings, for example

Methods of Propagating Immortality Herb

  • lowering
  • cuttings
  • rhizome
  • seed

Vegetative propagation via sinkers, cuttings or rhizomes leads to identical offshoots, so these methods are used most often.

Although it is possible to grow from seed, there is usually a lack of suitable seed. Seeds harvested from your own plants are rarely varietal.

Propagating mortality herb over sinkers

Carefully loosen the soil next to the plant. Select a long vine to place on the prepared soil. Lightly prick the tendril two or three times. Cover the shoot with soil and fix it with tent pegs if necessary. The shoot tip is not covered.

After a few weeks, small roots will form at the scratches and the plant will sprout new leaves. You can now separate the tendril and plant the young plants elsewhere.

cut cuttings

Cuttings are best cut in spring. They should be about 15 to 20 centimeters long. Remove the lower leaves and place the shoots cut-side down in prepared pots of potting soil.

dig up rhizomes

Larger specimens of the immortality plant develop rhizomes on the sides. You can easily detach these. Make sure there are enough roots on the rhizome. Plant the cuttings in prepared pots or a sheltered spot in the garden.

Grow Immortality Herb from seeds

Only buy verified seeds and expect few seeds to germinate even with proper treatment.

Before sowing, the seeds should be placed in water at 20 degrees for several hours before being sown in trays with potting soil. Gently moisten the substrate.

The seed pots (€16.68) are covered with foil and placed in a warm, bright place to germinate.
