The Haworthia is a succulent from southern Africa, of which there are over 160 different species. Many of them are well suited to be cared for as houseplants. How to properly care for the non-toxic Haworthia.

The Haworthia should not be watered in July/August

How do you water Haworthia correctly?

As a succulent, the Haworthia does not tolerate too much moisture. However, it should not be kept dry for too long. The plant rests from July to August. During this time she is not watered.

Water regularly from April to June and from September to November when the surface of the substrate has dried. In winter, only enough water is given so that the root ball does not dry out completely.

It is better to water a Haworthia from below, as no water should get inside the rosettes. Excess irrigation water must be poured off immediately.

What should be considered when fertilizing?

Fertilizing is not necessary. Too many nutrients soften the leaves and are more likely to damage them.

When is it time to repot the Haworthia?

Remove the Haworthia from the pot each spring to see if the previous pot is still sufficient. Carefully shake off the old substrate and place the plant in fresh soil and, if necessary, in a larger pot.

Does the Haworthia have to be cut?

Haworthias remain very small and therefore do not need to be cut at all. But you can cut daughter rosettes or leaf cuttings to propagate the plant.

What diseases and pests are there?

Diseases are rare. If there is waterlogging or water in the rosettes, root and leaf rot will occur.

Watch out for pests like

  • mealybugs
  • root lice
  • scale insects

An infestation should be treated immediately.

How to care for the Haworthia in winter?

Some species tolerate very low temperatures. Nevertheless, you should prefer to overwinter the Haworthia frost-free. However, a location that is too warm is not suitable.

The hibernation temperatures are ideally between 5 and 15 degrees. The warmer it is at the location, the more light the Haworthia needs, even in winter.

Don't keep the succulent too moist in winter to prevent it from rotting.

tips

The Haworthia can be multiplied relatively easily. You can grow new offshoots from seeds, daughter rosettes, or leaf cuttings.
