The Flaming Käthchen (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana) got its German name from the fiery red flowering wild form. In the meantime, numerous other flower colors have also been created through breeding, which can not only bring enduring flower splendor into your own four walls as a houseplant in a pot.

The Flammende Käthchen also cuts a fine figure as a cut flower

The enduring splendor of succulent flower beauties

While some other beauties of flowers only unfold their splendor for a few days a year, the Flammende Käthchen is a real permanent bloomer. Another reason for the popularity of the Kalanchoe blossfeldiana as a house and seasonal balcony plant is that it is relatively easy to care for. Even in midsummer, the succulent plant usually only needs to be watered once a week, fertilizer is sometimes not necessary if it is repotted annually in fresh succulent substrate. Also as cut flowers in a glass of water, the blossoms of Flaming Katy last much longer than many other cut flowers. You can enjoy a colorful bouquet of different cultivars for up to three weeks, with the water in the vase only needing to be changed about once a week.

Combine bouquet and grooming cut

In a sufficiently bright location, the Flammende Käthchen can reach considerable heights over time. It can therefore make sense to cut the plants back vigorously once a year for a more compact growth habit. The combination with the acquisition of attractive bouquets of flowers makes perfect sense with Flammenden Käthchen:

  • the plant gets more light again at the base
  • the formation of new shoots is stimulated
  • fresh shoots can still grow before the winter dormant phase
  • the flower buds for the following season can be formed in winter

Of course, when pruning the plants, the care and shape aspect should ideally come first and the cuts on the shoots should be made accordingly. In a further cut, the various flower stalks can then be shortened to the same length for the vase.

Successfully stimulate the Flaming Katy to bloom

Difficulties with renewed flowering can actually be solved very easily with Flaming Katy. After all, this short-day plant simply needs a 6-week dormant period in winter with around 14 hours of darkness. Since even artificial light can prevent the flowers from blooming in the following year, the Flaming Katy must be overwintered in a relatively dark room with absolute darkness during the night hours.

tips

Although the Flaming Katy is actually harmless to humans, consumption by cats can lead to symptoms of poisoning. Even as a cut flower, the Kalanchoe blossfeldiana should not be placed in a room accessible to house cats.
