Frangipani, also known as plumeria, is a succulent. This genus of plants is easy to propagate yourself if you have some basic knowledge. You can easily grow frangipani from cuttings. Propagation from seeds is tedious and not always successful.

Propagating frangipani - cuttings or seeds?
There are two ways to propagate frangipani: either take cuttings from an existing plant or sow seeds.
Propagation from cuttings is much easier and much quicker. Offshoots grown from cuttings often flower in the first year, while Plumeria propagated from seed take at least three years to develop flowers.
When growing from seeds, it is a coincidence which flower color the frangipani will later have. Cuttings offer the assurance that you are getting an exact copy of the mother plant.
Growing frangipani from cuttings
- Cut woody shoots as cuttings
- Allow the interface to dry for several days
- put in a glass of water or
- put in pots with potting soil
- set up bright and warm
- repot after rooting
It is best to cut the cuttings in spring. They should each be 25 centimeters long.
When propagating in a glass of water, the shoots must be about five centimeters deep in the water. The water should be changed every other day. If you want to put the offshoots in potting soil right away, use a mixture of coconut fibre, perlite (€37.51) and cactus soil as a substrate.
Place the cuttings in a very bright, warm place. They do not tolerate direct sun. Cuttings rooted in the water glass are repotted as soon as the roots are two to three centimeters long.
How to sow frangipani
- Allow seeds to swell
- sow in prepared potting soil
- alternatively sow in the germination bag
- just cover lightly with soil
- Moisten the substrate carefully
- Cover plastic film
- keep warm and bright until they sprout
For propagation in the seed tray, use potting soil mixed with sand or coconut fiber as a substrate. Fill the germination bag with perlite.
It takes two to five weeks for the seed to emerge.
