Weeding is probably one of the most unpopular activities in the garden - no wonder, since crouching on the ground and ripping it out is very tedious. Especially in the rock garden, fighting annoying weeds can be quite tedious, after all, not all areas can be easily reached. With our tips, however, this work will certainly be easier for you.

Weeds cannot be completely avoided in the rock garden either

Saves a lot of work later: prevent weeds when creating the rock garden

Experience has shown that unwanted weeds grow rampant, especially in the first few years after a garden has been laid out. Due to the intensive cultivation of the soil, so far dormant plant seeds come to the surface, which can now finally sprout. In addition, there are often weeds on the tufts of leaves or on the roots adhering to the remains of earth, which you got for free from the perennial nursery or from the nice neighbor. Therefore fight back the beginnings by using

  • leave the freshly worked floor area fallow for the time being
  • and wait for the weeds to germinate and sprout.
  • Remove them intensively: Even the smallest root remains must be removed.
  • To do this, you can pour boiling water over the weeds and then remove them.
  • Inspect newly acquired plants carefully before planting them
  • and remove any adhering weeds.
  • In addition, a weed fleece (€21.70) should be laid under the rock garden soil
  • and the surface of the earth mulched with pebbles, stones etc.
  • Even large cushion plants spread quickly and crowd out the weeds.

Effectively control various weed species

Basically, the gardener distinguishes between two types of weeds, which should be paid attention to different priorities when combating them.

seed weeds

Many flowering plants are seed weeds that reproduce primarily through their seeds. To contain the spread, you must remove these weeds before they wither - once the seeds have formed, it is already too late. Seed weeds develop particularly well in open ground areas, which is why intensive mulching with rock chippings can stop the spread a little.

root weeds

On the other hand, root weeds, which include many grasses in particular, are often much more difficult to control. The dreaded Giersch also belongs to this group. Many of these plants form deep, long root networks underground that are difficult to remove. In addition, new plants will sprout from even the smallest remaining pieces of root. In stubborn cases, only herbicides (if possible from a biological basis) can help here, but these are not applied to the surface but directly to the weeds.

tips

When laying out the rock garden, remember to lay stepping stones etc. These should be positioned so that you can easily get anywhere without having to step directly onto the planting.
