If a pond liner in the garden pond has clearly visible damage, you can save yourself the tedious search for the hole. In this article you can read whether the damage can also be repaired directly under water and what is needed for this.

Anyone who has fish in the pond must make sure that the glue is fish-friendly

Adhesive for pond liners

First of all, you always have to distinguish which type of liner is installed in your pond. You have to use different adhesives for PVC foils and PE foils than for EPDM foils.

Even if you want to repair damage under water, you have to use special glue. Ordinary PVC adhesives can only be used on dry films. In the case of EPDM foils, you should always dry them before repairing them. So you can seal more thoroughly.

Requirements for glue

If you want to use an adhesive in a fish or swimming pond under water, you should make sure of a few things beforehand:

  • that the adhesive is suitable for use under water
  • that the glue is compatible with fish
  • that the glue is compatible with plants

If these requirements are met, you can also assume that the adhesive is suitable for use in the swimming pond and that it is harmless to people.

Make sure beforehand that the liner installed in your pond is actually PVC liner and not PE liner. PE film is usually much less easy to glue and the adhesive strength of most adhesives is significantly weaker with these films.

You should refrain from an underwater repair of the damaged area with PE foil. In this case, you should rather consider draining the pond for repairs.

Renew foil

If you notice more and more damage over time, or if the film has become leaky overall, you should consider replacing the film. In the long run, this saves you costly repairs. When replacing, consider what type of foil you want to use as the new foil.

tips

If you nevertheless drain the pond before repairing the damaged area, you should only fill it up again 1-2 days after the repair. Most adhesives need that long to create a really permanently tight connection at the adhesive point.
