When you buy a pond liner, it is usually already cut to size by the manufacturer - so you no longer have to glue individual strips together. There can be exceptions if you want to create streams with foils or if tracks have to be joined together at individual points. Read here what to look out for.

Depending on the material, pond liner can be welded or glued

Adhesive and welded joints

Foil webs can be glued or welded together. If a pond liner is "assembled" by the manufacturer, individual strips are also used there.

They are then cut to length during the manufacturing process and welded together tightly and seam-tight using automatic methods during operation. This requires big machines and special techniques - you can't do it that way at home at the pond edge.

In most cases, gluing will be the method of choice - but you can also weld individual types of foil yourself.

First, determine what type of slide you have in front of you:

  • PVC pond liner
  • EPDM foil
  • PE film
  • other foils (e.g. special geotextiles)

Connect PVC foils

Here you have the choice between special PVC adhesives and the use of solvent welding agent. Welding agents liquefy the film at the weld seam and when it is weighed down these liquid parts run into each other and harden. This creates a permanently fixed connection.

When gluing, the two overlaps (at least 15 cm!) are simply firmly connected to each other. You then have to seal the seams extra.

Important:

  • work very carefully (especially with solvent welding agent)
  • the foil must be absolutely clean and completely dry
  • be very careful when roughening the foil
  • After connecting, weigh down the foil sufficiently (e.g. with sandbags)

Connect PE foils

You can usually not use solvent welding agent here - only sticking remains. However, be aware that the adhesive strength of most adhesives is significantly limited with PE foils, and therefore work all the more carefully.

Connect EPDM foil

Special adhesives are used here, for which you also have to roughen up and allow the adhesive to soak in first. Alternatively, there are also special adhesive tapes instead of liquid glue.

The foil must be particularly clean and also completely dry. To seal the seam you can easily liquid pond liner use, which you brush over the seam in several thin layers. Don't forget to complain here either.

tips

In the case of streams, sealing the subsoil with pond liner is the cheapest but also the worst option. If possible, use stream bowls or concrete the stream.
