If the pond is constantly losing water, there is a suspicion that the pond liner may be leaking. In this case, you should definitely act. You can find out what you can do to get the pond liner tight again in our article.

If the pond loses water, the pond liner is not necessarily to blame

Check for leaks

If the water level in the garden pond is constantly falling, this does not necessarily mean there is a leak. Other causes may also come into question:

  • a non-functioning or improperly designed capillary barrier
  • intensive solar radiation and therefore high evaporation on hot summer days
  • Intensive planting in the edge area with plants that absorb a lot of water (reeds, sedges, cattails)
  • older film that has become porous

If the capillary barrier is not sufficiently effective, the surrounding soil will practically suck the pond dry. This problem is particularly recognizable in individual or continuous swampy areas around the garden pond.

Intensive planting with reed plants or sedges can lead to the plants drawing a lot of water from the pond, especially when they sprout. This can definitely be the reason for considerable water losses in the pond, especially in smaller, intensively planted ponds.

Older PVC foils can become porous and thus leak in many places at the same time. If this is the case, or if you suspect this, you should definitely replace the pond liner.

Find leak

Once you have identified the pond liner as the culprit and ruled out all other causes, the first thing to do is to find the leak. In some cases, this can be quite time-consuming.

In this article you will learn how best to proceed if you cannot immediately identify a corruption. Just click on the link.

Repair pond liner

In most cases, a repair will make sense if it is only a single or a few damages. Read this article to find out how to repair different types of foil.
Repairing EPDM liners is particularly easy - you can easily use liquid pond liner.

Under certain circumstances, pond liners can also be repaired under water.

tips

The best way to protect the pond liner is to lay a layer of sand about 5 cm thick underneath the liner and lay a pond fleece on top. This already prevents damage to the foil. Some types of film are significantly more resilient than others.
