The dragon tree is a relatively easy-care houseplant that can be cultivated in specially mixed soil or as a hydroponic plant. Under certain circumstances, the various dragon tree species can tend towards an unaesthetic habit, but you can take uncomplicated countermeasures against this.

The growth of the dragon tree is influenced by the location
In particular, dragon trees with dark green leaves only tolerate locations with relatively little direct sunlight. However, if the location is too dark, not only can unsightly hanging leaves occasionally occur, but height growth also accelerates. Over time, the plants develop a relatively high and narrow habit, as they often consist of only one continuous, unbranched stem with a crown of leaves at the top. Ideally, you should rotate a dragon tree a little each time you water it so that these leaves do not align themselves sideways according to the direction of the light.
Shorten and branch the dragon tree
If you want to influence the growth form of the dragon tree towards denser branching, you can usually do this with a targeted cut. To do this, simply take a pair of sharp pruning shears and cut the trunk of the dragon tree horizontally at the desired height. Below this interface, new shoots usually form after just a few weeks, sometimes resulting in double or triple branching. You can let the upper part dry for a day at the interface and then use it as a cutting for propagating the dragon tree.
This is how cuts can be cared for
As a rule, it is not absolutely necessary to supply the interface with a dragon tree in a complex manner. With the following substances, however, you can prevent possible diseases of the plant wound and excessive dehydration of the stem:
- special tree wax (12.96€) as a wound closure agent
- candle wax
- coal dust
tips
You can definitely use the targeted pruning several times as a care measure for forced branching of the dragon tree. However, you should be patient for at least two years between the cuts so that the new shoots of the dragon tree can mature and grow undisturbed during this period.
