If the old pot is no longer sufficient or is no longer stable, it is time to repot the fan palm. When is the best time of year to repot, what should the new pot be like and what else needs to be considered?

The fan palm needs a sufficiently large pot

When is it time to repot the fan palm?

When the roots of the fan palm grow out of the bottom of the pot or the root ball pushes over the edge of the planter at the top, it's time to repot the houseplant.

The best time for repotting is early spring when you bring the fan palm out of winter quarters.

The right planter for fan palms

Like all palms, the fan palm forms very long taproots. The pot must therefore be as high as possible so that the roots can spread.

When repotting, choose a larger vessel than the previous one. The larger the new pot, the less often you have to repot the fan palm. Make sure that the bucket is stable so that it cannot tip over.

The planter must have a sufficiently large drainage hole. Lay a drainage made of gravel or potsherds in the bottom of the pot. Then no waterlogging can develop.

How to repot the plant

  • Fill a new pot with substrate
  • Pot the fan palm
  • carefully tap off the old substrate
  • possibly trim roots slightly
  • Put the fan palm in a new pot
  • Press the substrate carefully
  • pour on

Don't shake off any soil that's hanging between the roots to avoid cavities forming and to avoid squeezing the roots too hard when replanting.

Then water the fan palm well so that the root ball is soaked through. You have to pour out excess water.

Caring for fan palms after repotting

After repotting, the fan palm is not fertilized for several months. The fresh soil contains enough nutrients for the near future.

Do not place the fan palm directly in the sun after moving, but slowly get used to the new environment.

tips

You can buy substrate for fan palms in the garden center. You can also mix it yourself from compost, gravel, expanded clay (19.73€) and sand. It is important that the mixture is nice and loose so that no waterlogging can develop.
