The Ficus Benjamini can be easily propagated via offshoots

Cutting Benjamini Cutting - How to do it right

Spring is the best time to prune cuttings on your birch fig. If you plan to cut back anyway, the clippings will provide you with more than one shoot that is suitable for cuttings. The perfect scion is 15cm long, has several healthy leaves and was cut just below a leaf node.

Immediately after cutting, poisonous milky sap escapes from both the mother plant and the cutting. Therefore, place the shoot briefly in a glass of water so that it bleeds out. Cover the cut on the mother plant with a piece of kitchen towel or Tempo.

This care allows the offshoot to sprout roots

When plant secretion stops dripping from the cut, remove the lower leaves from the cutting. One or two pairs of leaves should remain at the top. How to proceed:

  • Fill a nursery pot with coconut fiber substrate or peat sand
  • Moisten the substrate with lime-free water
  • Pre-drill the planting hole with a wooden stick
  • Insert two-thirds of the offshoot into it

Press down the soil and spray the cuttings with lime-free water. Rooting will progress more quickly if you cover the pot with a plastic bag resting on two to three wooden sticks as spacers. The substrate must not dry out on the semi-shady, warm window seat. The hood can be removed when the first leaves sprout.

If a cutting has rooted through the breeding pot, this is the signal for its start in life as an adult Weeping fig. Repot the young plant in a bucket with a mix of potting soil and lava granules.(13.99€)

tips

If your birch fig is losing green leaves, finding the cause will prove time-consuming. By cutting and caring for a cutting in good time in accordance with these instructions, the continued existence of your Benjamini is ensured even if all rescue measures for the mother plant come to nothing.
