- The Dieffenbachia does not like drafts
- Wrong location
- Bad room climate
- Has too much or too little been poured?
The Dieffenbachia, which comes from the rainforests of South and Central America, is probably one of the best-known and most popular houseplants. One of the reasons for this is that it is considered to be extremely easy to care for and looks very attractive with its spotted or striped leaves. However, the foliage sometimes turns an unattractive yellow and falls off.

The causes for this can be:
- draft
- wrong location
- dry heating air
- lack of water
The Dieffenbachia does not like drafts
If the leafy plant is standing in front of a frequently tilted window or right next to a door, cool air is constantly blowing over the leaves. The plant does not like this at all and reacts by turning the leaves yellow.
remedy
Place the Dieffenbachia in a sheltered, warm spot where it will recover quickly.
Wrong location
The Dieffenbachia also reacts sensitively to a lack of light in a very dark place.
remedy
A semi-shady location, for example on a west or east window, is ideal. If the Dieffenbachia is a little away from the window, a plant lamp (€21.99) switched on by the hour provides sufficient light.
Bad room climate
Especially in the winter months, the humidity in the apartment often drops to a level that jungle plants like the Dieffenbachia do not like at all.
remedy
In this case, improve the climate by:
- Set up an indoor fountain.
- Position evaporation trays near the plants.
- Mist or wipe the leaves regularly.
Has too much or too little been poured?
Did you perhaps mean it too well with the watering or watered too sparingly for fear of root rot? This can also initially lead to yellowing of the leaves before they dry up and are finally thrown off.
remedy
Water the Dieffenbachia whenever the top centimeters of the substrate feel dry. Any excess water in the coaster should be poured out after a few minutes.
tips
It is natural for the lower leaves of the Dieffenbachia to die and be shed. If the plant becomes bald, it can be cut back to about twenty centimeters. It then drives out fresh and strong again.
