Triplets are very easy to cut and can therefore be very well cared for as bonsai. What you have to consider when pruning and caring for the triplet flower to thrive as a bonsai and produce many beautiful flowers.

The triplet is a great bonsai

What styles are possible?

Bougainvilleas can be designed in many different ways. Almost all bonsai forms are conceivable:

  • half stem
  • single stem
  • multi stem
  • semi-cascade

Cut triplets as bonsai

The younger the plant, the more often you have to use a knife. All new shoots are shortened to two pairs of leaves.

From May, do not cut the triplet so much, but only remove shoots that are very annoying. Otherwise you will cut off too many flowers.

If the triplet flower is older, it no longer needs to be cut as often. It is sufficient if you cut them back heavily after flowering. During the rest of the year, only light topiary cuts are made.

Triplet flowers can be wired

As long as the shoots are still soft and pliable, you can wire them very well. However, remove the wires in good time, as the triplet flower grows very quickly and the wire will otherwise grow in.

Caring for triplet flowers as bonsai

From March to September, the triplet flower is poured more frequently. However, you must avoid waterlogging at all costs. Never leave water in the coaster.

The triplet flower is fertilized as a bonsai during the growth phase from April to the end of summer at one or two week intervals. Special liquid fertilizers for bonsai are suitable. To save yourself the regular fertilizing, you can also use long-term fertilizers.

  • Overwinter triplet

In winter, the bonsai is set up at around 12 degrees. If the winter location is very dark, it loses its leaves. With sufficient brightness - for example by plant lamps - the leaves are preserved.

Only water the triplet very moderately during the winter so that there is no waterlogging.

In winter, the triplet flower is no longer fertilized. Only if you keep them in warmer temperatures and with enough light should you give them some fertilizer once a month.

tips

Triplets are very easy to care for outside in summer, as long as the temperatures are not too low. The plant is not hardy and must be overwintered frost-free indoors.
