The triplet forms its flowers on the tips of its shoots. If you don't prune these, they won't flower as well, or possibly not at all. When is it time to prune the bougainvillea and what to consider when pruning?

When should the triplet flower be cut?
The best time to cut the triplet is early spring in February or March, before new growth begins.
A pruning can also be necessary in autumn if you bring the triplet flower to the winter quarters for the winter. It takes up a lot of space, so you have to trim it first.
Correctly shorten the shoot tips of the triplet
To ensure that the plant branches well and develops a strong main stem, cut off all side branches that come off the main shoots. Shorten them right at the roots.
In the spring you can cut the triplet flower by half, especially if the plant is still very young.
Between the flowering periods, only shorten the new shoots by a maximum of half. It is very beneficial if you cut the flowering shoots as soon as the flowers have dried up. This stimulates the formation of new flowers, so that the triplet blooms up to four times a year.
Triplets can be cut into many shapes
Bougainvilleas can be cut into many shapes. It is up to you whether you grow them as a standard or shape them into balls. Basically, the plant copes very well with pruning.
Cut triplets as bonsai
Because they are easy to cut, triplet flowers are very suitable for growing as bonsai. Initially, the bougainvillea is cut very often to strengthen the trunk.
From May, do not cut the plant quite as vigorously. If the bougainvillea is already older, cut it back heavily after flowering. Also thin out the crown so that the air can circulate better.
Cut top cuttings in spring
If you want to propagate your triplet, cut 20 centimeters long top cuttings in the spring. These are put into substrate and maintained in a very bright, warm location.
tips
After a heavier pruning, the triplet flower needs more nutrients. It is therefore advisable to cut them afterwards or to schedule this care measure at a time when you wanted to fertilize anyway.
